The Northern Albemarle Chapter North Carolina Society Sons of the American Revolution

HAYES PLANTATION, EDENTON, NC – Samuel Johnston was born in Dundee, Scotland in 1733 and settled in NC in 1736. In 1754 he moved to Chowan County and established his home, Hayes Plantation, there. An early supporter of independence, he served on the Colonial Assembly’s Committee of Correspondence beginning in 1773 and was elected to the first four Provincial Congresses, presiding over the third in 1775 (Hillsborough)and the fourth in 1776 (Halifax, the latter of which produced the Halifax Resolves, the first official call for independence from any of the thirteen colonies.

Loggerheads to be Released

The NC Transportation Museum Hosts a Day Trip from Spencer or Greensboro, NC to Charlottesville, VA

SPENCER, NC – The N.C. Transportation Museum will host the Virginia Autumn Train Excursion bound for Charlottesville, Va. November 1-2. Presented by The N.C. Transportation Museum Foundation and the Watauga Valley Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society, the excursion offers rare daylight trips through the rolling hills of the Carolinas and the Western part of Central Virginia, using Amtrak and vintage rail equipment. The excursion departs at 7 a.m. from the N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer and arrives at 8 a.m. at the newly restored Greensboro Amtrak Station at 236 East Washington St. Passengers can board at either location before traveling a railroad line that crests the legendary White Oak Mountain, past the Dan, Roanoke, and James Rivers, arriving in Charlottesville, Va. at 12 p.m.

Motors range from an Arrow and Mace 2hp Model used from 1900 to 1920, a 3hp Evinrude Elto from 1923, to various Mercury and Johnson engines. Author To Discuss Her Search For Family Roots

EDENTON, NC – To culminate a community-wide reading of her book, Dorothy Spruill Redford, the acclaimed author of Somerset Homecoming, will appear on Sunday, May 4th at 3 p.m. in the John A. Holmes High School auditorium.  She will answer questions and discuss her ten-year search to recover the lost heritage of her ancestors, the enslaved people who worked and lived at Somerset Plantation, the historic site in nearby Creswell.

Rose Buddies Tradition To Continue

Tiger Woods on the Fore! Front In Western North Carolina

ASHEVILLE, NC – Recent Tour Championship winner Tiger Woods announced in August 2007 that he will design his first U.S. golf course at the Cliffs at High Carolina community near Asheville. “My goal is to design a handful of very unique courses around the world, and the Cliffs is a perfect fit for my first American design,” Woods said.
